THRU-Zim: Investing in research capacity development with EDCTP Prize

In 2023, the Health Research Unit Zimbabwe (THRU-Zim) was awarded the EDCTP Outstanding Research Team Prize, receiving a cash prize of €50,000. This significant funding has been strategically allocated to bolster the capacity development of early career researchers and the professional development of essential research support staff. These individuals, which include administrators, governance and finance officers, as well as research nurses and assistants, play a crucial role in ensuring the success of clinical studies.

Early career researcher clubs: fostering collaboration and feedback

Since January 2024, THRU-Zim has partnered with the University of Zimbabwe to establish monthly early career researcher clubs. These clubs serve as a platform for early career researchers, including MSc and PhD students, to present their work and receive invaluable feedback from peers and senior researchers. The clubs are predominantly led by early career researchers themselves, which not only empowers them but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility.

To enhance engagement across Zimbabwe, the clubs operate as hybrid events, typically accommodating 20-30 in-person participants and up to 100 online attendees. The funds from the EDCTP Prize have been instrumental in supporting catering for these in-person meetings, thereby encouraging further discussion and networking among participants. The positive reception of these clubs has led to the formation of new collaborations for MSc and PhD research projects, demonstrating the tangible impact of this initiative.

Addressing writing challenges for PhD students

One of the key challenges faced by PhD students associated with THRU-Zim is the limited time and physical space available for dedicated academic writing. This issue is often exacerbated by the geographical separation between supervisors and key collaborators. To address this, THRU-Zim has initiated biweekly writing meetings for PhD students at various stages of their academic journey.

The funding from the EDCTP Prize has facilitated these meetings by providing catering and a conducive environment for focused writing. Since their inception in February 2024, these sessions have significantly strengthened the PhD community at THRU-Zim, enabling students to support and mentor one another while holding each other accountable for achieving their writing goals.

Supporting international collaboration

Most Zimbabwean PhD students involved in ongoing research projects led by THRU-Zim are registered either at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK or at Ludwig-Maximilian University Munich in Germany. Despite the backing of their respective research projects, many students face financial constraints regarding travel. The funds from the EDCTP Prize have alleviated some of these limitations, allowing several early career researchers to attend vital conferences and training sessions abroad.

Launching the “Smile and Shine” initiative

In November 2024, THRU-Zim introduced the “Smile and Shine” initiative, aimed at supporting the professional development of 5-10 staff members, encompassing both research and support roles. Staff were invited to submit proposals detailing courses, workshops, or conferences they wished to attend, alongside explanations of how these opportunities would enhance their professional growth and contribute to the organisation’s objectives. The recipients of these career development awards are expected to be announced in 2025, marking another step towards fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Wellness programme for staff

Additionally, the EDCTP Prize will finance the inaugural year of a wellness programme for THRU-Zim staff, set to launch in 2025. Each quarter will focus on a specific theme, such as physical activity, mental health, and healthy eating. The programme will commence with an interactive lecture followed by weekly activities, with the first quarter of 2025 dedicated to promoting physical activity among staff.

The EDCTP Prize has enabled THRU-Zim to promote the professional development of early-career researchers and support staff. Through structured initiatives and collaborative opportunities, THRU-Zim is enhancing research capacity and fostering a supportive community dedicated to academic excellence.
