BCA-WA-ETHICS-II project publishes Roadmap for the Harmonization of Governance Strategies for National Research Ethics Committees beyond Health Emergencies
In a rapidly evolving world, where health emergencies are no longer the exception but part of our reality, the need for comprehensive, adaptable, and standardized governance strategies for National Research Ethics Committees (NRECs) has never been more critical. Developed by the BCA-WA-ETHICS-II project, the “Roadmap for the Harmonization of Governance Strategies for National Research Ethics Committees beyond Health Emergencies” addresses this need by providing a detailed guide for the harmonization of governance strategies, fostering a unified approach that ensures we are better equipped to handle future challenges.
The roadmap outlines key action areas such as:
Autonomy and Financial Independence for NRECs
Strengthening Leadership and Governance Capacity of NRECs
Establishment of Networks with Research Stakeholders and the Health System
Integration of Gender and Sex Dimensions in NRECs Governance and Management
Implementation of Online NREC Management Tools
Implementation of a Quality Management System for NRECs
Along with these action areas, the roadmap also discusses potential risks and mitigation strategies, thereby providing a comprehensive guide to strengthen the governance of NRECs beyond health emergencies.
This roadmap is a result of the collective effort of ethics committee members, researchers, and leaders in health governance from across various African regions. Download the English version of the roadmap (PDF). A French version will be available soon.
