Second interim evaluation report: EDCTP2 highly relevant in the EU and globally

The European Commission has published the final report of the second interim evaluation of the EDCTP2 programme. The main objective of the evaluation was to assess EDCTP2’s performance to date, with a specific focus on its performance between 2017 and 2021. The evaluation also considered the results from the first interim evaluation of the programme (covering 2014-2016), and EDCTP2’s capacity to implement the remaining foreseen activities by 2024.

The main conclusions of the report are that EDCTP2:

  • remains highly relevant both within the EU and globally due to its contributions to various EU policy objectives and SDGs
  • is largely coherent with other parts of the Horizon 2020 programme, and relevant national, regional, and international initiatives
  • is efficient in implementing the delegated tasks and achieving good results in terms of its objectives, targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • effectively achieves its objectives set out in the Annual Work Plans and continuously dedicates resources to improve its operations further
  • EDCTP2’s added value is multi-fold in the area of poverty-related diseases in sub-Saharan Africa
  • shows additionality through its capacity to leverage funding from private and public contributions and contribute to the development of various networks. Overall, EDCTP2 is also considered an open and transparent partnership.
