Dr Samuel Okware Samuel Ikwaras Okware, MB Ch B, MPH, PhD is a medical doctor and a public health specialist. He has a PhD in emerging infections from the University of Bergen (Norway). He is the Director General of the Uganda National Health Research Organization which coordinates and regulates health research in the country. His pioneering early studies on HIV contributed to the earliest national AIDS control strategies which contributed to major declines in HIV prevalence.
Dr Okware held senior public health positions in the Ministry of Health responsible for communicable diseases control, Maternal and Child Health and Emergency Preparedness. The largest Ebola outbreak in Uganda was contained through his leadership. He has also provided technical assistance through WHO and partners as a consultant. He was a member of the WHO Expert Committee on Research and Development.
Dr Okware has published and edited several books on HIV and Ebola. His research interests include malaria, HIV/AIDS and emerging and reemerging infections. He received national and international awards for his contribution to HIV/AIDS work, public health and containment of emerging infections.
