EDCTP Training and Mobility Fellow Dr Mary Aigbiremo Oboh (The Gambia), following the completion of her EDCTP-AREF Preparatory fellowship, was awarded the AAS African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence pilot programme (ARISE).

ARISE is a €25 million programme supporting 45 early-to mid-career African researchers hosted in 38 countries in Africa with research grants of up to €500,000 to implement 5-year cutting-edge research projects in contribution towards the transformation of Africa into a knowledge-based and innovation-led continent. The programme is funded by the European Union and implemented by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) with support from the European Commission and the African Union Commission.

This award will provide the opportunity for Dr Oboh to elucidate the directional interaction between the gut microbiome and malaria in children with varied clinical manifestations. In addition, she will be able to recruit and train young students in Ph.D. and master’s programme under this award. The AAS-ARISE award is hosted by the Medical Research Council Unit, The Gambia with cross-collaboration with scientists at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool, The University of Medical Science, Ondo, Nigeria and other industry players. Findings from Dr. Oboh’s study will provide insightful background that can be explored and build upon for any potential diagnostic and/or therapeutic benefits.
