Annual Report 2018 – a strong portfolio halfway EDCTP2
EDCTP published its Annual Report 2018 – 15th anniversary of the EDCTP programme in a new digital format. The report gives a quick overview of the milestones in the development of the partnership since 2003 and presents the strong EDCTP2 portfolio built since 2014.
Portfolio
Eleven calls for proposals were launched in 2018. This brings the total number of calls launched under EDCTP2 to 42. By the close of 2018, 192 proposals had been selected for funding, of which 148 projects had already started. The cumulative EDCTP2 grant funding has more than doubled compared to EDCTP1, reaching a total of € 447.15 million and this remains a rapidly growing figure.

At the end of 2018, 230 African and 139 European institutions in 61 countries (36 in sub-Saharan Africa, 19 in Europe) and institutions in six other countries are involved in our work.”

Successor programme
The EDCTP2 programme is implemented by the EDCTP Association, supported by the European Union under Horizon 2020, it’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The EDCTP2 programme will run til the end of 2024. A successor programme supported under the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon Europe (2020-2027) is already being discussed. It is planned to take off in 2021.
In his introduction to the Annual Report, Dr Mark Palmer (United Kingdom), who for the last five years chaired the EDCTP Board and its governing body, the General Assembly, reflects on the achievements towards the programme’s objectives and a likely successor programme. He concluded:
“EDCTP has helped in no small way to create and sustain a productive international research collaboration in the field of global health. I am looking forward to an even better and stronger third programme to deliver our collaborative contribution to lifting the burden of poverty-related infectious diseases.”

Public consultation on the successor programme
The European Commission has also opened a public consultation on the envisaged successor programme EU-Africa Global Health Partnership (Horizon Europe programme). Everyone interested in EU-African health research partnerships, especially the EDCTP successor programme, is encouraged to take this opportunity to contribute your views through the still ongoing EU public consultation on the EU-Africa Global Health Partnership. The consultation is open till 6 November 2019.
