EDCTP co-sponsors ‘TB Science 2018’ – the 49th Union’s research preconference

TBScience2018 is the official pre-conference event for the 49th Union World Conference on Lung Health. The scientific conference focuses on basic and translational tuberculosis research. The event takes place at the Marriot Hotel The Hague on 23-24 October 2018.
The Union organised the conference in partnership with the American Thoracic Society, the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development, EDCTP, the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the TB Surveillance and Research Unit.
Programme At TBScience2018, researchers from the fields of microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, pharmacology, epidemiology and mathematical modelling will present and discuss recent findings on TB transmission, infection and disease.
Additional focus will be on the development of better vaccines, drugs and diagnostics for TB, and methodological challenges to determining the burden of TB disease at the subnational level.
The programme consists of a morning plenary session on ‘TB treatment shortening’. In the afternoon, three parallel sessions are dedicated to, respectively, ‘Reducing transmission’, ‘TB vaccine developments’, and ‘Production and use of surveillance data’. The final plenary session on ‘M. tuberculosis infection: acquisition, control and clearance’ will take place in the morning of 24 October.
Dr Ole Olesen (EDCTP Director of International Cooperation for Europe) will co-chair Parallel session 1 and join parallel session 2 for its final panel. The panel will discuss ‘What does the TB vaccine field need to do now?’
The 49th Union World Conference on Lung Health will take place in The Hague, Netherlands from 23-27 October 2018. It’s theme is ‘Declaring our rights: social and political solutions’. For the full programme see Union conference website or download here (PDF).
