09 November 2016

The EDCTP Award for Outstanding Research Team 2016 was given to the University of Zambia – University College London Medical School (UNZA-UCLMS) Research & Training Program on 6 November 2016. The award consists of a trophy and 50,000 euro. At the opening session of the Eighth EDCTP Forum, Dr Peter Mwaba, on behalf of his team, received the award from His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

The University of Zambia – University College London Medical School (UNZA-UCLMS) Research & Training Program was founded in 1994 by Zambians to move African science away from domination by the North and to champion the cause for developing fair and equitable North-South research, training and capacity development partnerships.

Over the past two decades the UNZA-UCLMS Program has grown into a world-class programme, networking 34 institutions from across West, Central, South and East Africa linked to 28 European institutions. It has effectively brought together scientists, funders, politicians, and advocates to unite together in the fight against infectious diseases, particularly Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, diseases declared global emergencies by the WHO in 1993.

The UNZA-UCLMS Project has achieved very significant, multi-country research, training and capacity development deliverables on poverty-related diseases. The clinical trials and translational research data have been used by WHO and African governments for improving management and prevention of poverty-related diseases.
